June 17-21

Start Up Orchestra!

Cost $50                  Amanda Colson, Andrew Wehmueller

If you’ve signed up for 6th grade orchestra, this is a camp for you! Get a jump start for orchestra class. Students will learn how to hold the instrument, and play with the bow. All students must be beginning players. Students will show off their new skills in a final concert on Friday! Students must bring their own violin or viola. Cello and bass students may contact Amanda Colson or Andrew Wehmueller to use an instrument for the week.

Intermediate Orchestra

Don’t let summer stop you from making beautiful music with new friends! This camp is for violin, viola, cello, and bass students who want to learn new string orchestra music over the summer break. All students must know how to read music and have at least one year of playing experience for this camp. Students will show off in a final concert on Friday! Students must bring their own violin or viola.

Cello and bass students may contact Amanda Colson or Andrew

Wehmueller to use an instrument for the week.

Beginning Woodworking

Cost $60                               Al Dunkleman

This class will focus on the basics of working with wood. Students will learn how to use a sanding block, hammer, nail set, and screwdriver, along with finishing techniques. All materials, tools, safety glasses and dust masks will be provided. Students will not operate any power tools as all projects will be pre-cut and pre-drilled for gluing and assembling. Projects: Using new and reclaimed wood, students will make a napkin holder, bird feeder and tool caddy.

June 17 - 21

Food Fest

Come join us to have fun in all things food and art. We will be making real food, food art, and using food to create art! If you like snacking and creating fake food this class is for you too. We will create a paper assemblage taco, edible jewelry, and decorate a glass plate for you to use over and over again. Our class will also be making delicious (fake) ice cream sculptures, dying pasta, and creating felt sushi!

It’s All About Paint

This week is all about painting with everything except paintbrushes! We are going to drip it, roll it, throw it, and step in it....whatever you can imagine! Be prepared to get messy! Come wearing your old clothes and get ready for some fun!

June 24 - 28

Mad Scientist or Artist?

What happens when science meets art? What kind of magic happens when  artists try new ways of making art with new materials? This week will be all about experimenting with chemical reactions and testing new types of art making! We will make fizzy paint, test crayons and watercolor together and learn to use gravity to paint. If you are interested in experimenting this class is for you!

June 24 - 28

Adventure Time!

Do you love Adventure Time and creating awesome art about it? Always wanted to learn how to draw Princess Bubblegum? Or paint Jake the Dog? Then this camp is for you! This week we will focus on drawing, painting, and illustrating your favorite characters and scenes from the popular tv show, Adventure Time so that you can be a master Adventurer of Art!

June 24 - 28

Beginning Guitar

Interested in learning how to play the guitar? In this class you will learn basic acoustic folk/bluegrass/country chording and strumming techniques. You will learn how to hold the guitar, finger chords and hold and use a pick. During this week the goal will be for students to successfully learn and strum a simple two/three chord song individually and as a group. Students must bring their own guitar.

July 8 - 12

Pre-School Art With Dr. Seuss <---------PRESCHOOL CLASS!

Come join us for a week of imaginative, colorful art creations! All of our projects will be based on themes and characters from books written and illustrated by the beloved children’s author, Dr. Seuss. We will create vibrant and fun illustrations, a sculpture with Model Magic, collages, paintings, and drawings all inspired by Dr. Seuss’ creative books.

July 8 - 12

Art Around the World!

If you love travel, this is the class for you! Join us on our trip around the world as we visit different countries every day and explore the artwork we find! Projects will include work from France, Italy, Japan, Egypt, and Mexico! We will use painting, drawing, and sculpting skills to complete our work.

July 8 - 12

Printing, Dying, and Mess Making

In this class we will be tie-dying, printing using different techniques, and making messes with color. Some of our projects will include creating a batik pillow case, tie-dying a shirt, and designing cards. We will be doing squirt gun painting, floating chalk printmaking, and all kinds of fun. Please send in a 100% cotton shirt for tie-dying.

July 15 - 19

Art and Mystery with Detective Pikachu

Join forces with Detective Pikachu to unravel the mystery behind the disappearance of a young man’s father. We will put on our detective hats and pick up our paintbrushes to decipher clues through the creation of various art projects and solve the mystery only to discover a devious plot that poses a threat to the Pokémon universe. Come out and join Detective Pikachu for a fun filled week of art and mystery as we create fantastic works of art to solve clues and unravel the mystery!

I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream!

In this camp we will enjoy a week of ice cream themed art. Campers will explore a variety of textures and tastes with our materials. Some projects will include painting, printmaking, collage and tissue paper. We will even get to experience creating a sweet treat!

Unicorns, Fairies, and Mermaids, Oh My!

In this magical camp we will be exploring enchanting, fairytale

creatures. If you love fairy dust, mermaid tails, and majestic unicorns this is the place for you. We will be using mediums such as collage, paint, drawing, and GLITTER to create some truly fantastical artwork inspired by your favorite fantasy creatures. Fairy wings and other magical fashion encouraged but not required!

Crazy About Color

A week filled with exploring the limitless possibilities of color. The starting point of this adventure is the color wheel. We will learn about the art and science of color. Students will create exciting art using paint and dyes to create a range of artworks on fabric and paper. It’s good, messy, colorful fun. Please send in a 100% cotton shirt for tie-dying.

July 22 - 26

Marvelous Art - Avengers End Game

Where did all the hero’s go after the great snap? To art camp of course! Escape into a world of fantasy with your favorite Marvel characters through an action packed week of super powered art exploration and projects. Students will be creating various projects that are inspired by some of Marvel’s biggest heroes. From Thor’s hammer to Thanos’s gauntlet students will find themselves emerged in the world of their favorite heroes. Students will be creating items that are directly influenced by the blockbuster hit as well as the comics. I hope to see you there!

The Magical World of Harry Potter

Join us as we travel into the magical world of Harry Potter. We will be embarking on a journey filled with the magic of art and fun. Students will be happily at work in our very own Hogwarts here in Shelby conjuring up various art projects such as crafting a wand, recreating the marauder’s map, and crafting a book of monsters. So grab a broom and your best quidditch gear and join us for this amazing journey!

July 22 - 26

Beginning Weaving

This class will be exploring the many different ways to weave with yarn! Each class will be exploring another weaving technique, building off of the previous days. A lot of our weaving looms will be household objects or things found in nature, so the students can learn to weave with multiple materials and be able to weave at home with just yarn! Our projects will include circle weaving, stick weaving, and Ojo de Dios, among others!

July 29 - Aug. 2

Flower Power

In this camp, we will be creating art about and with beautiful flowers and plants. You will be amazed at the masterpieces we will create using things we see in nature every day. We will be using a variety of mediums to create projects such as a cyanotype print of real flowers, plants, and leaves, a beautiful vase of folded paper flowers, and an expressive watercolor painting of…you guessed it! FLOWERS! Nature and Art lovers alike will love this camp!

Exploring Clay

Come explore the creative possibilities of clay in this exciting ceramics class. Learn the methods of hand building-coiling, pinching, building with slabs and sculpting. We will explore different ways to add textures and surface designs to clay. The result will be the creation of many one-of-a-kind artworks crafted with clay.

Environmentally Friendly Art

A week filled with recycled materials, creativity, and love for our planet! We will use found materials in combination with traditional art supplies to create a range of two-dimensional and three-

July 29 - Aug. 2

Art in the Dark

In this camp we will create artworks that really GLOW! During the week we will explore various ocean animals and recreate them with fluorescent materials. We will create with model magic, paint, collage, and oil pastels. At the end of the week students will take home their own black light flashlight, so they can continue to enjoy their glowing artworks even after the camp has ended.

Aug. 5 - 9

Rock, paper, scissors, Matisse!

Do you like scissors? Do you like to create using paper? Let’s use our imagination and paint with paper inspired by famous Collage artists like Matisse, Bearden, Mondrian, and more. Come and join us and design your own collage(s). You will learn different ways to create a collage using paper, magazines, painted paper, and other items. We will experiment with grid style, picture pile, and Mosaic (small squares) to create beautiful designs.

All classes will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. Enrollment is limited.

 

CANCELLATIONS/REFUNDS: The Arts Council reserves the right to cancel a class if a minimum enrollment of 5 is not attained, unless otherwise noted. In such instances, previously paid fees will be fully refunded. Parents who need to withdraw their child/children from any Summer Arts Camp should contact the Arts Council at the earliest time possible. You will receive a refund, less $10 service charge per camp session only when notice is received at least a minimum of five (5) business days before the first class meeting. We will transfer your child to a later session if space is available.

 

GENERAL INFORMATION:

* Students should enter the Arts Center at the Warren Street side of the building, not the front door.

* Wear clothes that can get messy for all classes.
